Some people here are trying to denigrate one of the best contemporary sedan, a car the served the general public as Police cruiser, or as cabs. A car that provide jobs to many American workers.

Kinja'd!!!

There is nothing more American than a Panther.

Kinja'd!!!

People are free to say what they want, but I don't believe something bad can be said about a Panther. A strong, dependable, spacious and fast RWS V8 sedan for the mass.

And Panthers are NOT that fast. The only fast Panther is modified or a Marauder.

They were made in canada and used as taxis by foreigners and as transportation for government use and remained relatively unchanged since the 90s. Big deal. You know what else fits that same bill?

Kinja'd!!!

And guess what? The impala is faster . Oh and it gets better fuel economy. And it's cheaper.

That's an insult to the E39. A BOF boat with a big motor does not equal an E39.

The G8 is the American (in brand, at least) E39 M5.

The last one of these I saw that actually looked good was about 8 years ago. Everyone I've seen since in person has been handed down/bought by persons who refuse to take care of them. Damn shame. I always liked them.

The Impala wasn't a good car though. They could only take about 150k, Were rarely used as taxis probably because of that, and I can name off the top of my head all the major Police departments that used them.

Step 2) Strip the interior

Step 3) GM performance suspension upgrades

Step 4) CHEVROLET IMPALER! BEAT ALL THE 3-SERIES!

They were good for 150k without a single turn of the wrench. If you actually do maintenance, they run for just about as long as the panthers. Police didn't use them because they were more difficult to straighten and the fact that the impala made any headway at all in the stronghold of panthers says something about what it offered. Neither are very good. At all, really. They're just big. So my point is if you defend the panther, you have to eithe defend the impala as well or admit that you just want RWD and in that case, the panther is about the worst RD vehicle made post-1995.

2 door box versions are awesome. Drop in a warmed over 302 and have fun.

Kinja'd!!!

For the 98- up versions, installing an aftermarket upgrade Watts link and control arms does wonders from what I hear. Drove plenty of the last ones in stock form. It's amazing how different they would feel from one to the next steering and suspension-wise. Some felt great; others not so much..... I'm talking low mileage cars too.

Neither of them were made to be performance cars that every enthusiast will enjoy. They weren't made to be excellent handling road warriors. The Crown Vic, especially the P71 evolved into a purpose built car, and the Impala from that same generation turned into a barely used Police vehicle.

What I don't understand is what you are trying to place the Panther as even. It's meant to serve a purpose. Nothing more, nothing less.

I agree with both points, and that is my point. It was a response to the comments of a previous post of someone who didn't like the panther and loved the Park Avenue more than the luxury panthers. Then this post was made, so I made a counter-point that the impala does the same things a panther does, but aside from being more difficult to repair it is better in every other way. So really, the panther should not be held so highly unless you hold up the impala with it.

In the end, they're both just big, simple, crude sedans that the buying public moved away from.

I looked up how much it would cost to do a transplant a while ago with Crown Vic Sport buckets and center console (so the interior would remain the same color) and was appalled at the price. The console alone was several hundred bucks!

Is the marauder yours?

I'm going more on the side of public service vehicles here.

But tons of Police departments tried out the Impala, Hated it and sold all of them promptly. If the Impala does everything that the Crown Vic does, But better. Why did they all get rid of them so quickly?

They still offer the Police Pimpala for sale, and I haven't seen a single remotely new one in ages.

Again - I admit that the crown vic handles being broken and then repaired better. However the impalas were good detective cars since they were faster, got better mileage, and had more room on the inside. But detective/undercover cars make up what 1 out of every 20 to 30 beat cruisers? So of course most departments weren't buying a lot of them and would rather just lump in some unmarked panthers in with the rest of their 5-10 car order or whatever. Besides, being good at being damaged is rather specific to one industry and the impala is pretty tough itself for a unibody.

Being good as a police vehicle =/= being a good jalop car.

Kinja'd!!! jkm7680 > themanwithsauce - has as many vehicles as job titles
01/13/2015 at 16:28

Kinja'd!!!0

VSP used to have a few unmarked Impalas on the Virginia section of the I-95 corridor. Those lasted for probably less than a year before they were replaced.

Detective cars really aren't beat on as much as patrol cars, They're handled more gently. And that's why the Impala is mainly used by Detectives in certain areas.
